This is a tree topper unlike any other! Reminiscent of a freshly made snow angel, these pteropods are actually shell-less sea snails (Clione limacina). Unlike the typical snail, they flap their adapted foot ‘wings’ to get around in the water column. They are extremely small, with the largest species reaching only 5 centimeters long.

When close enough, the Sea Angel then uses its probosis to “cut” the Sea Butterfly from its psuedoconch and eats it. They are herbivores, feeding on phytoplankton, but they catch their food in webs, like spiders.

Sea Angels are large groups of small, swimming sea slugs, that has a scientific name of Gymnosomata. These creatures with their translucent, gelatinous skin and luminous glow almost makes them seem unearthly, but these sea angels are actually real, living in the depths of our ocean.

A remarkable example of adaptation to life in the open ocean, these mesmerizing animals can have thin shells and a snail foot transformed into two wing-like structures that enable them to “fly” through the water. By rowing their "wings" back and forth at 1–3 Hz, the sea angels swim at speeds up to 100 mm/s (0.22 mph). This is about twice as fast as their prey, the sea butterfly. It is not yet clear whether the sea angel uses its swimming appendages as 'rowing paddles' or as 'wings'. One of the most colorful sea creatures, it is also called whale meal or naked sea butterfly.
